Introduction

If you are a music lover then you must have a decent AV receiver or equivalent music system. They are definitely good for big sound but not portable. This is where we need a good sounding portable speaker.

Things you expect from a portable speakers is its portability, decent sound, good battery backup to name a few. UE WonderBoom mini BlueTooth speaker scores very high in those sectors and it is also Shock Proof (Kids Proof ;)), Water Proof and floats in water if dunk in a pool accidentally. It is rugged enough to withstand a fall from 5 feet. A Perfect all rounder.

Design and Features

UE WonderBoom is a compact soft looking speaker with tank like build quality. It is a little fatter than an average soda can and a bit shorter than. UE WonderBoom is rated IPX 7, that means it is Waterproof and can be immersed in normal liquid for up to 1 meters and up to 30 minutes max, this means that you can take it anywhere, from your bathroom to your picnic party or just let your kids have some fun without worrying that it may damage by a fall or a liquid.

The top and bottom are made of solid rubber and the middle part is made of mesh cloth which is also water proof. it is built so good that the waterproofing does not affects sound quality.

You can see a large Plus-Minus sign in the middle, which is for volume control. On the top are two visible buttons, the front button is Power button and at the rear end near the elastic loop you can find the Bluetooth pairing button. Between both these buttons you can see the embossed “Ultimate Ears” markings, which is used as play pause button, all these buttons work on AVRCP protocol to control your connected device’s audio controls. At the rear bottom just below the elastic loop you can find the MicroUsb charging port. It is covered by a rubber shutter to stop liquid to enter the port.

The speaker deliver sound in 360 degree direction at a maximum sound level of 86 dBC which is good. It is capable of playing sound between 80 Hz – 20 kHz frequency range of sound, hence do not expect it to produce exceptional Bass. Inside are two 40 mm active(Amplified) drivers and a pair 46.1 mm x 65.2 mm passive radiator. A decent package.

UE WonderBoom is packed with a lithium-ion rechargeable and can play for up to 10 hours in ideal condition, though it will vary with the usage style. A Normal charger can charge the battery in 2.8 hrs approximately.

You can pair up to 8 Bluetooth® devices and two of those devices can be connected simultaneously. you can pair similar (Same model from Ultimate Ears i.e. UE WonderBoom only) speaker for more big sound. The Bluetooth range is quite good, up to 100 feet or 30 meters in ideal conditions.

I Played lots of tracks with acoustic sounds(Passenger – Let her go (Normal and Acoustic version), Jason Mraz I am Yours and more, normal Bollywood with lots of beats, International Top Trending tracks (Maroon 5– Girls Like You, Moves Like Jagger, Marshmello – Happier, Ed Shreen – Shape of you, Perfect, Thinking out loud, DJ Khaled – Wild Thoughts, RHCP Dark Necessities) All Time Favourites (Santana – Smooth, Maria Maria, Udit Narayan -Pehla Nasha, Lucky Ali – Sunoh, O Sanam, Dekha Hai Aise Bhi, Train – Soul Sister, Eagle – Hotel California(Live Version), Queen – We will Rock You) Ghazals (Pankaj Udhaas – Chandi kjisa rang hai tera, Thodi Thodi Piya Karo, Gulam Ali – Chupke Chupke raat din) Real Sufi Songs (Not from a movie track) with Lots of Tabla, chorus and Tabla (Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan – Kinna sona tainu, Afreen Afreen, AR Rahman Kun Faya). The music service used was Amazon Music at 320 KBPS Audio Quality via Laptop and Asus Zenfone 5Z Mobile.

It is really pleasant and complete sounding BlueTooth Speaker. You can play songs on it the whole day. Delivers more than its size. High notes are quite good, Guitar Tracks sound so good (Not as good as Marshall though and also not right to compare with). Enjoyed Santana, Eagles and “Neele Neele Amber per” the first song taught in Indian Guitar Class, and many other tracks with lots of guitar. The vocals are quite clear and it aces in this segment most of the times. The bass as expected it not glass shattering but still big for its size. At 60-70 volume you can hear beats from other room but it will not vibrate your wooden furniture or window glasses as much as it does while playing songs on my Japanese AV receiver at 51 level Volume and Full Bass. Again comparing it with full size AV receiver with 8 inches of dedicated powered Woofer is injustice, but I’m quite impressed with the level of Bass it delivers for its size. Compared with equivalent level of JBL Flip BlueTooth Speaker and found both good or bad with certain tracks, which is case with all speaker systems as not all speakers are made with same materials and same design, but I’ll choose this one because of its size, ruggedness, waterproofing, smaller size and competitive price. You can take these speakers outdoor without fear of accidents and liquid damages. Can hand over to kids without hesitation. Overall it is a complete package and you can keep it on and playing throughout the day (10 Hours or max run time in single charge) without a break. The only problem I found is that you cannot make calls with these excellent sounding speakers, this is a big omission, it could have been a good speaker for general conference calls.
